A scared little two year old Golden Retriever with the name of Cookie came to our house as a very sick foster with heartworms, tape worms, ear infections, etc. in August 2006.  She was scheduled to be euthanized the day she was "sprung" by Golden Retriever Rescue of Mid Florida.  She was only supposed to stay with us until she was healthy enough to go onto the Rescue web site for adoption.  By the time she was healthy enough to be adopted, this sweet little girl had totally won our hearts and we adopted her and re-named her Maggie Mae.  Maggie's gentle soul won the heart of everyone she came into contact with.  She loved traveling with us.  She seemed happiest when she would run like the wind thru the snow and wildflowers in Colorado. 

 

She developed a chronic liver disease in late 2010.  Our goal was to support her liver and hope that she lived long enough to die of something else.  All went well for awhile, but this past year, all the meds she was taking started to take a toll on her body.  She had lost most of her muscle mass and was so skinny.  Her last couple of days she lost her appetite and that's when we knew it was serious.  On Sunday, August 4th, she refused to eat and had difficulty breathing.  We planned to take her to the vet in Durango Monday morning.  On Monday morning, she went outside to go to the bathroom and then collapsed & died on the steps coming back into the RV.   She lived a good life; seven years longer than she would have had it not been for GRRMF.  Her little paw prints left big holes in our hearts when she had to leave us to join her friends waiting at the Rainbow Bridge.
